The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.
This week’s prompt was submitted by Kristin @ Lukten av Trykksverte
Do you read books by diverse authors or books with diverse characters (such as LGBT, ethnic minorities, religious minorities, etc)? If yes, do you have any book recommendations? Do you visit indie and/or used bookstores? Also, have you ever worked in any?
My answer to both of these is not as much as I should!
With regards to diverse books and characters, like many my eyes have been opened lately as to how non-diverse my reading is and I’m trying to do something about it by being more aware of the books I’m picking up each month. Since I started thinking about this more I’ve definitely been more aware when reading if a book has very little or no minority representation so I was really pleased this week when I signed up for Storygraph to have an explore that one of their main review questions they asks if the book has a diverse cast of characters as this is really something that needs to start being called out more.
With regards to bookstores, I went into more detail in this Blogger Hop back in June. This is something I really want to do more of once its safer to do so.
I’m looking forward to seeing other people’s recommendations this week, I have a horrible feeling my book wishlist is going to get a bit longer!
I think you and I will see a movement towards calling attention to whether books are diverse. I will be surprised if that doesn’t happen ❤️

You raise a good point, Elizabeth.
I seek out books that will engage me with a great story and characters that I can root for. I’ve noticed that some of my favourite authors have a greater number of diverse characters than others. Perhaps as part of our rating/scoring systems, diversity should be more of a factor. Food for thought.
