Book Blogger Hop ~ 24th April 2020

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

This week’s prompt was submitted by Flora @ Flora’s Musings

Do the star ratings a book receives on Goodreads or retail sites affect whether you buy the book or not?

Generally its word of mouth recommendations that influence my book-buying rather than star ratings on sites, I can’t think of many books I’ve read just because I’ve seen them on Goodreads and not also heard of them elsewhere.  Having said that I’ve started getting a monthly book subscription box where each month the book I get is a surprise and I do tend to check the star rating of that book when I receive it just out of interest but by that point I already own the book.

What this question did make me think of is whether the star ratings on Goodreads/retail sites are comparable as personally, I tend to think of a 5 star rating on Goodreads as different to a 5 star rating on Amazon – does anyone else find this?

  1. Thanks for answering my question. 🙂
I think star ratings play a part but they only work in conjunction with substantiating thoughts/comment – one person’s 3 stars could be the equivalent to another’s 4. There’s a lot of contention about 5 star reviews on Amazon being paid for so I’m more inclined take note of Goodreads ratings plus what the stars equate to on Goodreads v Amazon differ slightly too.
